Recycling is the transformation of things, old and used, into things new and usable; it is perhaps one of the easiest ways for us to be green. When we take the time to reduce the volume of trash we produce, by recycling most of it, we will help to keep usable goods out of the landfills and cut down on the use of virgin materials. Recycling goes way beyond the paper, plastic and aluminium that we are all familiar with, in fact, almost everything that we use and consume on a daily basis can be recycled in one form or another. Below is a quick guide on how to recycle and save the earth.
Create a Recycling Space: The first step to recycling effectively is to delegate an area in your home or office as the recycling space. This area should be clean and dry and out of the reach of animals and small children. An ideal recycling space should consist of several labelled containers for different items.
Recycle your Curbside: Curbside recycling is the type that most of us are familiar with; these are the items such as paper, aluminium, glass and certain plastics.
Recycle your eWaste: Electronics such as cameras, computers, tablets, television sets, refrigerators, microwaves and lamps can be recycled. Do your research to find a eWaste recycling center near you.
Recycling your Miscellaneous Items: Items such as CD’s and DVD’s, printer cartridges and batteries can also be recycled.
Start a Food Compost: Composting is a wonderful way of recycling food scraps into rich mulch. Mulch encourages new vegetation to grow.
Donate instead of Trashing: Donating usable items such as old and shabby toys and outdated clothing and furniture is a popular form of recycling. Doing so extends the life of the items and fills you with that warm and fuzzy feeling.
Buy Sustainable: Buying items made from recycled materials, and then recycling them again helps to keep the reconditioning cycle moving. The use of new resources is drastically reduced and less trash is produced when you buy recycled goods. Buying sustainable also refers to buying items that pose little to no harm to the environment, research the product or service for sustainability before you purchase.
Educate Others: Teaching others about the valuable art of recycling will strengthen the movement and inspires others to want to do the same.
