Since electronic gadgets are so necessary or so addicting, depending on your point of view, either way recycling them yields results. Not recycling them is a threat to humans and Mother Nature everywhere.

When the electronic waste or e-waste is properly recycled, various processes take place. Ultimately though, what is the result of e-waste recycling? If e-waste is handled properly then results are gained. Proper handling can be summed up in a simple old useful slogan: reduce, reuse, recycle.

Since e-waste is growing worldwide by megatons every year; e-waste recycling is also growing yearly.  Driving the e-waste recycling boom is the popularity of personal electronic gadgets and growth of data centers.

Currently 26 states have laws governing electronic recycling which is one of the most dangerous types of recycling because of toxic substances released during their deconstruction.

The reasons these states have recycling laws is that they create a positive results which can be put into categories.

Results for the Environment

The environment is under siege enough as it is without the specter of e-waste overload. So e-waste recycling helps to alleviate the crush of so many products coming to their end of life. Before we heard about carbon emissions there was air pollution. Proper e-waste recycling alleviates air pollution because it does not get burned in landfills! And it alleviates water and soil pollution too.

Proper recycling means that hazardous waste will not be dumped into the environment. E-waste contains pollutants like arsenic, lead, antimony and barium to name a few. So the result of e-cycling is less damage to our natural environment.

And since we live in the natural world, the last thing we need is exposure to more toxins so e-cycling is good for human beings too!

Results for Health

Dumping, improper processing and burning of E-waste can cause health problems for all of earth’s living things animal or vegetable.

So when done right, e-cycling would diminish another threat to all living things.

When living things ingest toxins then problems are sure to arise. By proper handling e-waste and it’s toxins the threat of harm from e-waste is diminished.

Long term, there is only way sustainable way and that way is e-cycling.

Results for the Economy

Reusing, refurbishing, remarketing, donating, and re-selling are all part of the e-waste puzzle. Mining for metals is much more expensive than collecting e-waste and subsequently smelting it for reclamation.

Of course reusing and remarketing is the ultimate efficiency for the economy.

Creating electronics from raw materials is many times more expensive than recycling them.

Since the cost of making electronics from e-waste is cheaper there is a net gain for the economy because you obtain the same product with less cost!

Results for Business

  1. More Jobs
  2. More employment in an industry that used to barely exist
  3. Greater efficiencies in production
  4. Creates a sustainable future
  5. Recycling is in the national interest. (Germans are at least 20% better at it than Americans!)
  6. Plays a big role in information technology asset disposition

Results for More Efficient Energy Use

  1. The energy used in making a computer is 10 times that of reusing or reclaiming metals
  2. Mining for minerals is much more energy intensive than e-cycling computers!
  3. Consumer and business products can be manufactured with recycled material which makes for an even better return on your energy investment!
