Recovering Value From IT

We all know that IT assets lose value everyday as new technologies are coming to market.
So the point is to manage the inventory to limit risk. At some point the office or data center inventory will become filled with out of date equipment. The first instinct is to scrap it, however, refurbishing of older computers is worth considering because of the different opportunities available.

In our efforts to give the best customer support we sometimes make errors in purchasing which causes an overstocked inventory. Sometimes return rates and defective rates are a factor. Whatever the cause or reason, part of  the solution lies in better forecasting and planning; which is so much easier said than done!

Seeing the Big Picture

Another factor is that some companies do not see the big picture by analyzing new inventory as it relates to inventory that is losing value faster. In some cases old assets can be combined with new cheaper components in order to recover value for resale.

Older assets can be found to be in good working condition and used as spares or backups.
Doing this potentially saves a significant amounts of money.

Using Spares

Once the IT department has determined that older models are not a good choice for spares then the computers could be donated, sold on E-bay or re-marketed by an IT Asset Disposition  company. Of course be sure and securely remove any confidential information from memory storage!

And then again don’t forget that some inventory will inevitably turn out to be defective in which case the manufacturers warranty is to be considered.
